Notes / Summary

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the Church’s formal process for welcoming adults into full communion with the Catholic Church through conversion, catechesis, and the sacraments of initiation.

OCIA is not merely a class or an information course. It is a rite‑based journey of faith that unfolds over time, ordered toward Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist, and rooted in the Church’s understanding that faith is received, formed, and lived within the Body of Christ.

The Catechism teaches that “the catechumenate… is an apprenticeship of the entire Christian life” (CCC 1248). Through OCIA, inquirers are gradually introduced to Sacred Scripture, the Creed, the Sacraments, the moral life, and prayer, all within the rhythm of the liturgical year.

OCIA matters because the Church does not ask adults simply to assent to ideas, but to undergo conversion of mind, heart, and life. Properly implemented, OCIA safeguards doctrinal integrity, respects human freedom, and prepares candidates to receive the sacraments worthily, knowingly, and fruitfully.

This course is designed to help parishes carry out that responsibility faithfully, clearly, and without improvisation, in full continuity with the Catechism and the Church’s liturgical norms.
